Members of the Tayside Christian Fellowship family attended Week 1 of the Keswick Christian Convention 2024, an unforgettable time of spiritual growth, rest, recharging and rich fellowship. The theme this year was ‘Resurrection’. David Gibson of Trinity Church, Aberdeen led the Bible readings throughout the week, drawing us into the resurrection themes found in Isaiah and that it is not only found in the story of Easter, it a theme throughout both Old and New Testaments. His exploration of passages like Isaiah 26:19—where the dead rise and sing for joy—brought the hope and renewal of God’s promises to life. Through his teaching, we were reminded that even in the darkest times, Jesus’ resurrection offers ultimate victory over death.
Tim Farron’s Powerful Message: Being People of Peace in the Culture Wars
A standout moment for many attendees was Tim Farron’s impactful talk, Being People of Peace in the Culture Wars. Farron challenged us to remain firm in our faith while engaging with a culture that often feels at odds with Christian values. He spoke passionately about the need to act as peacemakers, navigating today’s polarised world with grace and truth. His message encouraged us to be a calming, gospel centred presence, even when faced with difficult conversations.
Emu Music Concert: Worship Through Song
The Emu Music concert was another highlight of the week, drawing the Keswick community together in worship. Their Christ centred congregational music resonated deeply with everyone present. It was a time of heartfelt singing and reflection, as the music reminded us of the beauty of worshipping God together as one body. The concert was a refreshing and uplifting experience, leaving a lasting impression on all who attended. It provided a huge spiritual impact joining together in worship with thousands of other Christians.
A Typical Day at Keswick
Each day at Keswick followed a well-rounded structure that balanced spiritual teaching with time for leisure and reflection. Mornings began with seminars that covered various topics, offering attendees the chance to dig deeper into their faith. Following this, we gathered for David Gibson’s morning Bible message, where his teachings on Isaiah captivated and inspired us. The extensive bookshop provided some new reading material for relaxing afternoons and to take some pf the Convention lessons home in print. Many afternoons were also spent catching up over coffees with mutual friends and savouring the sweet treats of the bakeries and ice cream shops which line the High Street! An afternoon at Saltmine theatre company’s production of Bob Hartman’s Rhyming Bible also provided some light entertainment.
Afternoons were an opportunity to explore the beauty of the Lake District, and for many of us, that meant spending time outdoors with family and friends. One of the highlights was a family walk up Latrigg, which offered stunning panoramic views of Keswick and Derwentwater. For others, rainy days were spent enjoying simple pleasures, like taking a peaceful boat ride around the lake with the family dog. A great way to spend time with family and friends was playing a relaxed round of putting or pitch and putt.
The day concluded with the evening message, where we came together again to reflect on the day’s teachings, hear different speakers from all across the UK and worship as a community. The combination of engaging talks, worship, and fellowship made each day spiritually enriching and uplifting.
Memories of Outdoor Adventures
For some attendees, early morning runs or walks around Derwentwater became a cherished routine. There was something special about starting the day with a quiet run along the lake, soaking in the stillness and natural beauty before the busyness of the day.
Andrew reflected on how these moments allowed for peaceful prayer and contemplation, setting the tone for the day ahead.
David R provided one leisure highlight of his time was being on the pitch and putt course.
