At Tayside Christian Fellowship, we’re blessed to have many of our congregation actively involved in serving at the Keswick Christian Convention. Over the past six to seven years, TCF members like Moira, Mary, and Marion have taken on various roles—from the welcome team to the reception, youth work, and more. Their experiences not only speak to the impact of volunteering but also highlight the deep connections they’ve built and the profound moments they’ve witnessed.
The Heart of Volunteering
The Keswick Convention relies on an incredible 600 volunteers across its three-week duration. Whether it’s greeting attendees with a smile, serving coffee, managing lost property, or guiding newcomers to their seats, each volunteer plays a vital role in the smooth running of the event. Moira, who has spent the last three years in reception, recounts the diversity of tasks, from collecting donations to reuniting people with lost wallets and phones. But it’s the emotional and spiritual moments that often leave the deepest impression.
One such experience involved Moira comforting a woman grieving the recent loss of her father. The woman was heartbroken as her father had passed away before becoming a Christian. Moira felt called to sit with her, offering to pray despite her initial hesitation. That simple act of compassion and prayer stayed with the woman, who later sought Moira out to express her gratitude. It was a humbling reminder of how God uses each of us to make a difference, even when we feel unqualified.
The Community Impact
Serving at Keswick isn’t just about the convention itself. The event has a ripple effect on the local community. Marion shares a delightful story about an Italian ice cream shop owner in Keswick who experienced a surge in business during the convention. So much so that he donated a portion of his profits as a thank-you for the increased trade. It’s clear that Keswick touches lives far beyond the church tents.
Lost Property
One of the more surprising aspects of volunteering at Keswick is handling the variety of lost property that turns up during the convention. Moira recalls finding everything from wallets and mobile phones to water bottles and even a set of keys labelled “vestry,” presumably belonging to a pastor or minister. Hats, umbrellas, and other forgotten items are also common, and the team often marvels at how such essential items get left behind.
Encouraging the Next Generation
One of the most inspiring aspects of Keswick is seeing young people get involved. Rebekah, has spent three years working with the 8–11-year-olds, and she absolutely loves it. The convention provides a space for young Christians from all over the country to come together, often for the first time, in a large, vibrant community of faith. Mary highlights how young attendees are often awe-struck by the scale of the event, with one group of teenagers remarking, “Wow, we’ve never been in a place like this before!”
A Rewarding Experience for All Ages
No matter your age or background, there’s a place for everyone to serve at Keswick. From organising youth activities to helping attendees with mobility issues, volunteers find a sense of belonging and purpose. As Moira shares, even the simplest acts of kindness—like offering a smile or a word of encouragement—can have a profound impact on someone’s day. And while the work can be tiring, the spiritual rewards are immense. Marion emphasises how the youth work is particularly special, providing Christian young people with a space to connect and grow in their faith.
