TCF’s connection with Hungary goes back to 2010. Since that year, with only Covid years as an exception, we have sent out a number of volunteers to help with Christian, English language camps in a varity of places within Hungary; Bódvaszilas, Miskolc and Pécs.

Pécs is a city in the South West of Hungary. We had an inaugural camp there last summer and, at the start of July, a team of ten people from Scotland (six of whom are from TCF) headed back out to help lead an outreach camp for young people. This camp was a partnership between TCF and a Reformed church in Pécs (Pécs-Belvárosi Református Egyházközség) where we have contacts. The Scottish volunteers worked alongside Hungarian leaders at the camp.

A typical day at camp looked something like this:

9:00 – 9:30am Meet altogether

9:30 – 10:30am Group session 1

10:30 – 11:00am Break

11:00 – 12:00pm Group session 2

12:00 – 12:30pm Break

12:30 – 1:15pm Lunch

1:15 – 2:00pm Break

2:00 – 4pm Afternoon activity

4.00 – 4:30pm Break

4:30 – 5:30pm Evangelism

5:30pm Younger campers go home

6.00pm Evening meal

6.30 – 7.30pm Discipleship session with the oldest campers

We had a wonderful week. The theme was “Power-Up” and this was followed during the group sessions in the morning and the evangelism sessions in the late afternoon:

Monday: Power of Trust – ABRAHAM

Tuesday: Power of Courage – ESTHER

Wednesday: Power of Forgiveness – JOSEPH

Thursday: Power of Obedience – JOSHUA

Friday: Power of Love – JESUS

In the morning sessions we broke into 3 smaller study groups based on age and English-language ability. These sessions were a mix of Bible study, story-telling, videos, crafts, games, songs etc.

In the afternoons we did a variety of things:

Monday – Team Identity (each team to create a name, banner and song)

Tuesday – Scottish afternoon

Wednesday – Team games

Thursday – Excursion

Friday – Hungarian afternoon

The campers loved the ceilidh dances that we taught them on Tuesday afternoon!

It really was a great week and we’ve attached some photos to show some of the things that we got up to. 

We would like to express our extreme gratitude to TCF for supporting our mission financially through collective gifts and individual donations. Your kindness was quite overwhelming. Thank you also for your faithfulness in prayer – it goes without saying that unless God is front and centre of the work, then we labour in vain. Our camp was enriched greatly through your support and we pray that the fruit of this camp will last for eternity.

We plan to return to Pécs in 2027 and would value your prayers as we begin to think about that in the weeks and months ahead.
